Join us in february 2026 for another exciting training

Go Beyond the Basics — Get Braver, Messier, & More Skilled in the Therapy Room

Are you ready to move beyond foundations and into the more complex, nuanced realities of relational practice? Then join us again for How to Be a Relational Therapist: Level Two! Across four modules, you’ll explore the stickier moments of therapy—ruptures, grief, shame, client ambivalence—while also embracing the unconventional, the creative, and the playful sides of being a relational therapist.

Each module weaves together interactive theory with experiential practice in dyads and small groups, ensuring that the material doesn’t just stay in your head but comes alive in your body and in session. You’ll practice rupture and repair, try out shame interventions, experiment with embodied techniques, and continue to workshop how to talk openly with clients about politics, belonging, and authenticity.

Along the way, we’ll also turn the relational lens on you — exploring how you navigate dual relationships, build policies that sustain your humanity, and learn to trust the process (while inviting your clients into that same uncertainty). We’ll close with celebration and play, because joy and community are just as essential to relational therapy as courage and messiness.

Are we having fun yet?? By the end of Level Two, you’ll walk away with practical interventions, renewed confidence in your relational stance, and an established community of peers who know that the mess is where the magic happens.

Join us—we can’t wait to dive even deeper into the mess with you!

Commitment

Our hope is that you will attend all four training days. This is important because each day’s material builds upon the previous training modules.

Similar to Level One, this is designed to be a cohort model. As the focus of How to Be a Relational Therapist is on relational work, building relationships with your fellow training participants is a significant support to furthering your learning. Consistency also helps deepen your connection to the community of fellow relational therapists you’ve been building. We encourage you to keep in touch and reach for each other for support!

your training team

All of our instructors are actively working as clinicians using the Relational Therapy modality. They each have extensive experience in modeling self-awareness, curiosity, and professional ethics, and have worked as clinical supervisors for associate clinicians and clinical interns. They have diverse lived experiences and identities, and are trained in anti-racist and anti-oppressive clinical practice. Our instructors will help you learn how to develop your professional identities and build stronger therapeutic relationships with clients, leading to better therapeutic outcomes.

level two: beyond the basics

Part One

Getting Messy: Rupture & Repair

Facilitated by Anna Kim, LCSW & Paul Kindman, LMFT

Every strong therapeutic relationship will encounter rupture—what matters is how we move through it. We’ll explore common rupture moments, how to recognize and address them, and why the cycle of rupture and repair is so central to trust and change. We’ll also look at the “six-month hump”—when acute symptoms settle and clients may want to end therapy prematurely—and how to normalize, challenge, and invite clients to engage in the deeper work that leads to lasting change.

In dyads, you’ll practice naming rupture, responding to client ambivalence, and experimenting with ways to support clients in choosing the longer arc of healing. You’ll leave with practical tools and more confidence that the messy moments in therapy are opportunities for deepening, not failures.

Part One is on Feb. 22nd, 2026 1-4:30pm

part two

Beyond Technique: Creative & Courageous Interventions

Facilitated by Anna Kim, LCSW & Dani Marrufo, LMFT

Relational therapy doesn’t always follow the conventional playbook—which can make it more fun! We’ll experiment with unconventional ways of deepening therapeutic work: from collateral sessions with loved ones; to extending session time for trauma processing; to weaving in somatic and playful approaches. We’ll also spend focused time on two of the most difficult yet transformative relational landscapes: grief & shame. Grief often brings clients into therapy but can be hard to sit with over the long haul; shame silently erodes belonging and pushes clients into withdrawal or perfectionism. You’ll learn how to meet both with authenticity, vulnerability, and care, helping clients stay connected in moments they most want to retreat.

Dyads and/or small groups will give you space to explore how to lean into your relationship with shame and grief as a support for clients, experiment with tools to address these complex emotions without pathologizing them, and discuss how to creatively adapt the therapy frame to better meet your clients’ needs. Let’s expand your sense of what’s possible in the therapeutic relationship while maintaining your grounding and clarity.

Part Two is on Mar. 22nd, 2026 1-4:30pm

part three

Showing Up Whole: Humanity & Justice in the Work

Facilitated by Anna Kim, LCSW & Dani Marrufo, LMFT

Relational therapy asks us to show up as whole humans, and sometimes that can feel like too much. We’ll explore this tension and identify creative ways for showing up authentically without burning out. You’ll learn how to navigate dual relationships with confidence, develop policies that protect your humanity and support your clients, and reframe boundaries as part of relational care rather than barriers to it. We’ll also dig into the activist heart of relational work: contextualizing diagnoses, inviting political conversations, and recognizing the therapeutic relationship as a form of justice and belonging.

You’ll practice client conversations around politics, values, and leadership, while reflecting on your own personal boundaries and relational stance. You’ll leave with a stronger sense of how to continue to integrate your humanity into the work—not as a liability, but as a powerful and ethical resource for your clients and a sustainable support for you to stay inspired doing this work.

Part Three is on Apr. 26th, 2026 1-4:30pm

part four

Trusting the Process: Play, Uncertainty & Celebration

Facilitated by Anna Kim, LCSW & Kaitlin Kindman, LCSW

Relational therapy can feel messy, uncertain, and even stagnant at times—but these moments often hold the most potential. In this closing module, we’ll practice what it means to “trust the process” and how to invite clients into uncertainty as a path toward growth. We’ll explore how humor, play, and celebration can shift the energy when things get stuck, and how leaning into shared vulnerability (rather than forcing progress) can open new doors. After all, sometimes the bravest thing we can do is laugh when things feel hard!

Dyads and breakouts will help you experiment with lightness in the room, play with paradoxical interventions, and practice celebrating small shifts with clients. We’ll close with community and celebration, affirming that joy is just as central to relational practice as courage and repair.

Part Four is on May 24th, 2026 1-5:30pm and includes a one-hour closing celebration 4:30-5:30pm

    3. Demonstrate interventions for working with grief from a relational lens, including maintaining connection in the presence of loss.

    4. Describe shame as a relational and social phenomenon, and practice at least two interventions to support clients in moments of shame.

    5. Apply unconventional relational interventions (e.g., collateral sessions, extended sessions, or co-therapy with loved ones) and evaluate their clinical appropriateness.

    6. Reframe dual relationships as potentially supportive rather than inherently unethical, and articulate guidelines for navigating them with integrity.

    7. Discuss how to integrate political, cultural, and justice-oriented conversations into therapy in ways that support client authenticity and belonging.

Once you have submitted your registration and payment, your spot is secured and you will receive more information as the start date gets closer.

  • If you need to cancel your registration for any reason, you must do so by Thursday, January 22nd by sending an email to training@kindman.co. If you cancel by this date, you will be eligible for a full refund of any payment you’ve already made. Any cancellations after this date will only be eligible for a partial refund.

If you‘ve signed up for the bundle pricing and decide to cancel your full registration, you must cancel one month prior to the start of level one for a full refund. If you decide to cancel only your level two registration, you must cancel one month prior to the start of level two. In this case you will be refunded the remaining amount, less the full level one price (based on your pricing tier.)

  • We are dedicated to making our service offerings and trainings accessible to all who are interested. We do have a handicapped parking spot available in our private lot that can be made available to you with advance notice.
