If you were born between 1980 and 2000, you’re a millennial. Don’t groan! We think that’s a great thing. At Kindman & Co., we don’t think that you’re defined as a person by the year you were born any more than by other superficial aspects of who you are. People have complex, multifaceted personalities that deserve to be honored and valued. However, there are some concerns that seem to be common for those who are considered millennials, and whether or not you fall into this age group, you may find yourself identifying with some of the issues impacting the millennial generation.

so, what’s going on with millennials?

When the culture portrays an entire generation of people in a certain, often negative light, it’s likely you start believing what you hear. Is there something wrong with you? For so long, you thought you were fighting for a better world, but now, it seems like that world is trying to say your wishful thinking, do-gooding, “snowflake,” behavior isn’t going to get you anywhere. Even when our loved ones and people in our community say these kinds of things as “jokes,” it can be really hurtful. At Kindman & Co., we are here to validate your experiences, not belittle them. In addition to living in a culture that doesn’t seem to think much of millennials, we know that there are a number of other challenges facing your generation, including:

  • Unprecedented educational debt – millennials who were encouraged to seek college educations, at any cost, are now struggling with huge student loan bills.

  • Political turmoil – at local and national levels, politics is a hot bed that sparks feuds and leaves many feeling real fear for themselves and their families.

  • Economic instability – even before the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, the U.S. economy has experienced a rollercoaster of ups and downs since the early 2000’s. In the wake of COVID-19, financial stability feels like a pipe dream for many millennials.

  • Ecological destruction – despite the efforts of many millennials, the creeping and inevitable effects of the industrial revolution on the earth continue to present themselves as real and terrifying concerns. Increased severe weather events, climate change, natural resource loss, and species that are slowly dying out. The whole world feels like it’s getting worse instead of better.

  • Technological isolation – you can say anything online. That doesn’t mean you should. While the advances in technology have given the millennial generation great resources for communication, education, and business, technology also leaves many feeling less connected to their communities. Bullying and hate speech are also rampant across the internet where people use the anonymity to say whatever they think without considering how their behaviors affect others.

  • Generational conflict – it’s so much more than the “Ok Boomer” meme, but also, it’s the “Ok Boomer” meme. The older generation seems to point the finger at millennials for struggling financially or being snowflakes who care too much about everything, but maybe the old school yard retort, “When you point your finger you have three pointing back at you,” holds true here. Older generations place blame on millennials while often failing to take responsibility for rapidly rising national debt, environmental collapse, and other serious world issues that began in their generation. The frustration is real. Say, “Ok Boomer” out there, but bring the real talk to us.

how do we approach millennial therapy differently?

At Kindman & Co., we believe in therapy as a resource for individuals who want to develop greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, and authenticity. We approach concerns like anxiety, depression, difficulties with food and healthy eating, and substance use from a place of knowledge seeking. Our clinicians look at these experiences as messages from the individual’s mind and body. How can understanding the sources of your anxiety give you more information about what you need to lead a more purposeful life? Is the feeling of calm or numbness achieved through substance use something you’re missing in other parts of your life? These are the kinds of questions we want to explore with our millennial therapy clients. We don’t see you as broken. We don’t want to fix you. We want to partner with you, so you can better understand and advocate for your own and your community’s needs in healthy, meaningful ways.
